Fall 2009 by-election results are in! Winning candidates are in bold
Hello! This is Vicky Chan. I am from Coquitlam. I love socializing, communicating with people, doing sports like tennis, and playing the harp. I'm living in Totem Park Shuswap house. I'm in the PPE CAP stream program! I'm so stoked about this year, are you? I want to know what YOU want to see happen this year, any event ideas, any parties, get- togethers, career mentorship programs. I'm totally open to new ideas. Let me be your voice in the Arts Undergraduate Society. I ensure you it'll be a great and memorable year for first years. Social events, dances, career mentorship programs, coffee get togethers, karaokes, skating or pool parties, need I say more? Give me a chance to be your voice, and I promise you, you won’t regret it. Thank you for your support!
My name is Clara Ho and I am running for AUS 1st Year Representative. I didn’t have opportunity to run for Rep position before but now I’d like to try! An AUS Representative should have clear ideas of what is best for the Arts community yet open to new ideas at the same time. I definitely have great suggestions to contribute and am very outgoing so feel free to approach me with ideas. I’ve had past leadership experience at volunteer jobs involving group activities with different kind of people as well as children. I understand that there is a lot different point of views out there and I certainly put everyone’s opinions into consideration. As a representative I will be organizing events/activities for Arts students to come together and meet new friends. Help students to cope and become comfortable with the UBC environment. Put the opinions of students into mind and spread the Arts spirit around campus! I hope to make this a good year for all Arts students and provide awesome events for everyone to have a break from all the studying; relax and just have a blast. Vote for me and thanks for the support!
Hi I’m Navio Kwok and I’m running for first year rep for the AUS. I,
Things I will do for you:
No write-up submitted.
Hello All! I'm Johanna Mickelson and I'm running for AUS first year representative! I’m from Calgary, Alberta and I’ve wanted to go to “Beautiful British Columbia” since my first dance competition here (a long time ago). I’m currently in the CAP program for individual and society, and loving it! I am extremely outgoing, I have a passion for performing, speaking in front of others, and musicals. My Job is to listen to all your complaints and concerns and (try my hardest) to help you, and get the type of arts faculty you need and deserve. I WILL make the rest of council hear and ACT upon your concerns, I am good at that I assure you. My goal is to create applicable proposals to improve what you don't like, so there's a stronger foundation and argument which creates a way to actually change what us as first years don't enjoy about our program (hopefully “Fraush” or lack there of, and in my eyes the weak advertising, and enthusiasm for this great faculty.) So make sure between September 30th and October 2nd you march over to Buchanan Block D and vote for Johanna Mickelson - First year representative.
I’m Mary Leong, a second-year Psychology and French major running for the position of Second Year Representative in the AUS. Self-styled eccentric with a penchant for musical theatre, hats, and adventures, I seek creative expression through the written word, and sheer exuberance of being. In addition to writing for the UBC BlogSquad and the Ubyssey, I am also the Social Coordinator of the UBC French Club. I hope to bring a certain spark of spontaneity and servant leadership to student government.
With a campaign platform no more than 5’2 tall, I will be dedicated to working closely with, and for, the second years in the Faculty of Arts. In the true spirit of responsible and representative government, I believe in bottom-up governance, and involving the student body in the AUS decision-making process. I promise a strict open-door policy to my office hours (home-baked goods provided) – I want to hear all your views, opinions, and queries! I will also strive to provide necessary information on resources and facilities available to each and every Arts student.
So spread the word, and spread the love – vote Mary Leong, get YOUR views represented, and together, we’ll make this year the best yet!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead, US anthropologist & popularizer of anthropology (1901 - 1978)
This quotation has always inspired me to get involved. Did you know that Margaret Mead spoke at the opening ceremony of International House in 1959? I’m putting myself forward as your second-year Arts Rep because I want to help make this the best year ever. I’m a new transfer student who is studying French with the goal of becoming a teacher. As Arts students, we have a great opportunity to make a difference in the world. This is an exciting time. I encourage everyone to get involved as much as possible. By joining a club or volunteering for a committee, you can meet people and learn more about our community. Knowledge is power! By electing me as your rep, I can offer enthusiasm, the drive to make things happen, and a desire to strengthen the Arts presence on campus. I am looking forward to working with the Arts Undergraduate Society and all of you to make this year memorable.
What does AUS stand for? It means All U vote Scally (for Third Year Representative)!!!
My name is Scally Chu and I would like to be your Arts Undergraduate Society (AUS) Third Year Representative. I am a third year student with a combined major in Economics and Statistics. If you want your voices to be heard, you must vote for me because I will speak up for you and make your opinions matter! It will be my pleasure to communicate and interact with each and everyone of you and help you in every possible way. And don't be scared to complain directly to me, since I complain a lot too. Also, I will make sure all AUS resources and services will be easily accessible to you.
I am highly involved in school activities, such as the 2008 Career and Grad Fair and 2009 Student Learning Conference. Moreover, I was a squad manager for Imagine Day this year. (Go Arts Go! WOOT!) After volunteering for these events, I realized that it is my calling to help students everywhere! Therefore, I want to be more helpful to students by joining the AUS. Please vote SCALLY CHU for your Third Year Representative!
Hi everyone! I’m Daniel Lin and I want to be your AUS 3rd Year Rep.
One of my areas of Great Personal Interest is STUDENT COMPASSION and MUTUAL REPRESENTATION and that is why I’m running to represent each of you, especially those of you in your 3rd year. My top priorities and platform specifically addresses this; it’s designed to ease and enhance your UBC experience by reducing your specialization conflicts and anonymity common within such a large faculty, allowing you to have a more intimate relationship with your representative and establishing solid venues for expression.
I’ve been involved with many student clubs, organizations, and government that dealt with addressing social and environmental issues, include Co-Founding the UBC Mixed Club, directing the Student Environmental Association, and establishing the Socially Responsible Investing club. It is through this experience that I’ve come to find my love for people. It has become my passion. And it is with this that I hope to be the liaison between you, the Arts Student, and our AUS Council. I look forward to maintaining the relationship the council has with its students and to ensure that the AUS has done our best to earn your Votes."
Don’t worry, Mini Min’s here!
I am an International Relations major, the AUS rep for Le Club Français, and a member of International Relations Students Association. I transferred to UBC from Korea a year ago, after studying in England for 8 years. Through my international background and my motto, [Make Today A Better Day Than Yesterday], I hereby declare to be at your service and provide you with the following features:
And many more at your request. Thank you for considering me as your AUS 4th year Rep.
[VOTE FOR MIN!]

Hey I’m Barnabas Caro and am running to become a General Officer of the AUS. I’m a first year student who went to High School in Tanzania. I really want to get involved in student societies and think becoming a General Officer would be a good way of doing so. I was Student President my last year of High School and love to go hear what my fellow student are interested in, get back to the student society, and GET IT DONE. That why I’ve put my phone number on my poster. If any of you have any Questions, Advice, Suggestions, or just want to talk; don’t hesitate to call me. That’s what I feel a student society is all about: talking to each and every student who has something to say, talking it over with the president of the AUS, and GETTING IT DONE!
I’m a New Zealander. For those of you who don’t know what that means, just tick the box next to my name or do whatever is necessary to get me elected and be done with it. For those of you who do know what that means, tick the box anyway.
I’m a third year student, in my second year at UBC (I was previously at the University of Auckland, New Zealand). I came to UBC for Day of the Longboat, and stayed for Storm the Wall. I think that UBC has a ton of things to offer students and I want to be a part of that through the AUS. The AUS should make being an arts student an enjoyable and unforgettable experience – I want to help it offer that!
Anyway, core reasons to vote for me:
As a small town kid from Ontario, I’m crazy about Vancouver and the community atmosphere of UBC. I love spending time with friends, discovering the city and the campus alike, and don’t mind the occasional late night in Irving. As a second year Arts student, I’m fascinated by the breadth of opportunities offered within our faculty and hope to encourage all arts students to get involved and make a difference. I am devoted to promoting sustainable and enjoyable events and initiatives for all arts students. Personally, I will help promote fun and interesting social events that strengthen the bonds within our diverse and eclectic faculty. I also wouldn’t mind seeing the Arts County Fair reinstated, and would enjoy being a part of this process. With respect, commitment and passion I will be a voice for the needs of all arts students and am excited to see what can be accomplished through cooperation, dedication and the fun-loving spirit of the Faculty of Arts.
Dayanqi Si is a perfectionist who always tries her best to do everything that she wants to do. Working for Arts Undergraduate Society is something that she has passion with and she promises to spare no effort serving other students! She worked for student society in middle school for six years and the comment from the president was punctual, honest, optimistic, outgoing, considerate, dedicated and very responsible. She got awards every year without any doubt. The most significant point is she loves student communities. You will never get an earnest officer like she. Vote for her!!!!!!!! She will offer you the best in return!!!!!!!!!(*^__^*) Thank you!
Hi, fellow arts students! My name is Jonathan and I am running for the position of general officer with the AUS. Being a first year international transfer student, my scope of interests, if elected, will largely be on:
Each and every Arts student matter, for without you, Arts would not be the vibrant faculty it is today. I look forward to having your support during the Arts Undergraduate Society Elections, from September 28th to October 2nd. VOTE JONATHAN FOR GENERAL OFFICER!
Let me begin by saying thanks to all who took a moment of their time to acknowledge this brief message about me and the position I’m running for.
We gather here in this prestigious university from all over the world for many reasons; whether it’s to prepare ourselves for advanced research in an internationally renowned institute, or to embrace the extraordinary scenery surrounding this beautiful campus, we’re stuck here; so why not try to make the best of these years by meeting new friends and crashing into random parties?
I know that not all of you who are reading this know me personally, but you aren’t here just for me - you are here because you believe what this faculty can be, believing in the difference you can bring by just 1 vote.
I didn’t choose to run for Social Coordinator for the popularity or fame. I chose this because I believe in the difference I can bring to the faculty of arts, and all students within. I will be sure to host the best parties on campus to bring everyone together, and to bring your experiences to a whole new level.
My name is Renee Ng, and I am running for Promotions Coordinator in the AUS. As the chair of the Promotions Committee I would be responsible for the promotion of all the AUS events and services. I will be making sure all of you will know about all the benefits and fun AUS will be bringing to YOU! and I can guarantee I will make your experience at UBC much more sensational and unforgettable!
A little bit about me...you might not always see me around campus, but I am deeply involved in the behind the scene works of UBC. Along with participating in events organized by our university, like Imagine Day, I also volunteer quite a bit in our community in hopes to help others, like with the Canadian Cancer Society, at soup kitchens, and many others.
While all of the current promotional media created by the AUS may already be fabulous, I firmly believe I could do an even better job in presenting information to all of you! I have had many opportunities in the past to work with graphics media: I have created menus for restaurants, pamphlets for clubs and other organizations; in high school, I was the director of yearbook committee. I am certain I have what it takes to succeed in this role!
Hey every one!
This is my first year in the UBC arts program I am excited by the diverse, wonderful people that this universities BIGEST faculty contains. I want to be your Promotions Officer because I want to be a part of the mechanism that brings UBC arts students together. My goal will be to make sure that not only do you want to go to on campus events but that you know where they are, and what there all about. I have a passion for planning and publicizing and am excited to have the opportunity to do so. My experience on previous student councils and as a participant in Vancouver’s Youthpolitik program has prepared me well for this position and I’m ready to demonstrate that to you.
May 2009-2010 be Arts at UBC’s most exiting year yet!

Hello all Arts students. My name is Katherine Tyson and I am hoping to be elected as your AUS representative on the AMS. I am perusing a degree in Political Science with International Relations, minor in Asian Language and Culture, and have experience in many clubs and student organizations. I am running because I want to contribute a pragmatism that deals with issues as they present themselves, instead of approaching them with pre-existing conclusions. I will do this by getting your opinions and then incorporating them as appropriate into the issues that are presented, in order to continually improve the conditions for Arts students at UBC. If you elect me I will never forget that I represent your interests, and will work diligently to provide you with the best outcomes at all meetings.
I hope you will select me as your representative.
